The Science of Saying 'One More Episode' and Regretting Life at 2 A.M
You know that moment when Netflix asks, 'Are you still watching?' Yes, Netflix. Yes, I am. And I hate myself for it. So, hey there! I am yet another victim of the horrible one-more-episode phenomenon. I am also a victim of the dramas with over a hundred episodes, and I do, in fact, end up watching every single episode (on repeat).
The science of saying “one more episode” is way deeper than we perceive. This saying is motivated by the dedication to finish that certain serial. And that dedication is motivated by the interest that has been built. That interest is built through the interesting plot, and attachment to fictional characters (or the handsome actors playing them).
I remember waking up at 7 a.m on a weekday once, just to finish a drama with a very pathetic story. The first thing I did when I woke up was reach for my phone, and binge-watch the episodes, which were conveniently more than required. To top it off, I had exams starting from the next week; instead of binge-studying, I was binge-drama-watching. Talk about dawdling expertise. Exams? Oh, they could wait. My full priority that week was to finish a 150-episode drama with a plot so bad, even the characters wanted to quit.
To be honest, this is probably very relatable. Nearly all of us care SO MUCH for our mental health, staying up late to make sure our mind gets the complete plot of the show. Sleep? Never heard of it.
Mostly, and usually, Gen Zs and Gen Alphas are only concerned in satisfying the part of their mind which is still a child, begging for five more minutes of play time. We definitely over-see the part of our brain, which is far more mature than us, requiring adequate sleep. Honestly, though, I don’t think there’s any such thing as these two parts of the brain I’ve mentioned with such confidence (maybe there are, I’m not really familiar with my own biology).
Sometimes—most of the time, I have been forcing myself awake till 2 a.m, just to finish episodes of a drama, or finish a book. What am I—we—doing with our life? I have never been so disappointed in myself before (Actually, I have). But hey, who needs academic success when I can recite every line of a K-drama instead?
